Circumcision is an operation that removes the foreskin covering the head of the penis. Whilst many boys never require treatment, there are situations where circumcision or another minor procedure may be recommended to relieve symptoms or prevent future complications.
It is important to remember that a foreskin which does not fully retract in younger boys is usually a normal part of development and does not necessarily require treatment. Our consultant paediatric surgeons will carefully assess your child and recommend surgery only when it is clinically appropriate. In many cases, reassurance, simple observation or treatment with a topical steroid cream may be all that is needed.

An undescended testicle occurs when one or both testicles have not moved into the scrotum before birth. This affects around three to five percent of full term baby boys and is more common in babies born prematurely.
In many infants, the testicle descends naturally during the first few months of life. If it remains undescended after six months of age, referral to a paediatric surgeon is recommended.
Early treatment is important because it may help reduce the risk of:
• Fertility problems later in life
• Testicular cancer
• Testicular torsion

A thorough examination and determine whether an operation called an orchidopexy is required to move the testicle into the correct position.
