What is Paediatric Cardiology?

Paediatric cardiology focuses on investigating and treating heart diseases that are present in the growing and developing child. This includes treating congenital heart disease (present at birth), arrhythmias (variations in heartbeat rhythm) and disturbances of circulatory function. 

Heart disease is an extremely broad term for many things that can go wrong with the heart. In the instance of children, heart disease still covers many types of problems that range from a condition that has no symptoms and is never diagnosed, to a problem that is severe and potentially life threatening that is apparent at birth.

One of the most common heart conditions in children is congenital heart disease. This is the general term for a range of birth defects that affect the normal way the heart works, and means that the condition is present from birth. This birth defect affects up to 8 in every 1,000 babies born in the UK.
