Anyone can suffer from a seizure, and these occur when a high number of nerve cells, called neurons, send out an uncontrolled electrical charge at the same time. This intense wave of electricity overwhelms the brain, leading to a seizure, which shows itself through temporary muscle spasms, a loss of consciousness, strange behaviour, or other symptoms.

Seizures are not all alike, therefore one child may experience different symptoms to another.

Unfortunately, diagnosing a seizure is a child is extremely difficult. As they tend to only last for a short period of time, your doctor is unlikely to witness your child experiencing one. Your doctor will also need to rule out other conditions that could be causing the seizure, such as nonepileptic seizures, which are caused by other factors including reductions in blood sugar or blood pressure.

Positively, although extremely worrying for the parent or carer, seizures don’t cause any pain to be inflicted on the child.
