According to data from www.coeliac.org.uk, Coeliac Disease affects around one in 100 children in the UK, although the majority of children are undiagnosed and it isn’t until later in life that they are diagnosed with the condition.
The condition is caused by an abnormal immune system reaction to the protein gluten, which is found in foods such as bread, pasta, cereals and biscuits.
What are the common symptoms?
- Bloated belly
- Irritability
- Diarrhoea, constipation and other gut symptoms
- Change in growth pattern, including faltering growth
In undiagnosed cases of coeliac disease, there is a risk of further complications being suffered. These include:
- Delayed puberty
- Impaired weight gain
- Growth issues
- Chronic fatigue
- Osteoporosis
- Iron deficiency anemia
A gluten free diet can help ease the symptoms. However, it is extremely important that you do not remove gluten from a child’s diet until after they have been diagnosed with coeliac disease by a healthcare professional.
