According to data from www.action.org, an estimated 1.1 million children in the UK are suffering from asthma, a lifelong condition that can cause coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness.
Think that your child may have asthma? Here are some of the key tell-tale signs and symptoms to look out for:
Cough
- A persistent cough or a cough that keeps coming back
- A night time/early morning cough – this is common in children with asthma.
- Coughing after exercise or being active
Wheeze
- Your child makes a whistling sound when breathing
Tight chest
- A ‘tummy ache’ is how children might describe it
- They might rub their tummy or chest
Breathlessness
- Fast breathing
- Using other parts of their body when breathing. This may include shrugging their shoulders up and down when breathing in and out
Please note, the severity of these symptoms will vary from child to child. Asthma can lead to them missing school and make it difficult for them to participate in playground games and sporting activities, whilst other children may be admitted to hospital to receive treatment.
