The movement of stomach contents into the oesophagus is known as gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR). When symptoms are nonexistent or are not bothersome in newborns, it is termed a physiological condition.
The issue normally occurs when the child is under the age of 8 weeks old and is usually resolved in 90% of newborns before they reach the age of 1.
Paediatric GORD should be suspected in infants who have regurgitation and one or more of the following symptoms:
- Distressed behaviour, including excessive sobbing, crying when feeding, and strange neck postures.
- Hoarseness and/or a persistent cough
- A single bout of pneumonia
- Feeding troubles that are unexplained.
- Growth is slowing/faltering.
