Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy - What are they?

Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy is a test, which allows us to look at the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and duodenum. A gastroscope is a long flexible tube (similar in thickness to a little finger) with a bright light and video camera at the end. Biopsies are usually taken with forceps and sent to the laboratory for analysis.

The test lasts about 15 to 30 minutes, and the results will be available in two to three weeks.

The procedure in performed under general anaesthetic. Therefore, it should not cause discomfort or pain during the procedure. However, the patient may feel mild throat

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a test done to examine the entire colon (large bowel).  A flexible tube (scope) with a bright light on the end is gently passed through the back passage into the large bowel. Our Gastroenterology consultant will look for signs of redness, swelling, bleeding ulcers or infections of the bowel wall. Biopsy samples are usually taken during the procedure and sent to the laboratory for analysis. The procedure usually takes about 30-40 minutes. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.
